Otis Frizzell joins street art campaign

POLICE are launching a new street art campaign in Cuba St’s Left Bank with renowned street artist Otis Frizzell.

The stencil (above) is modelled on Kylie Schaare, a detective in the child protection team.

Tonight the image will come to life with the aid of a light installation projecting the image of an offender above the stencil.

“I’m amazed at Otis’ talent” says Ms Schaare. “It’s a bit unusual having a police recruitment campaign in such an urban environment but it’s turned out very good.”

Otis thinks that the campaign is very good, though he found it unusual that the police were approaching him to start with.

“But I’m down with the cops, they’re all good,” says Otis.

Otis compared the work to that of the notorious London street artist Banksy,who is renowned for using his satirical stencil street art as a means of social commentary.

“Graffiti is often seen as a common scourge, so we’re flipping convention on its head,” says Otis.

The campaign is targeting 18 to 25 year-olds and is looking for young professionals and those who look outside the square.

Ms Schaare has been a police officer for more than 12 years and has been a detective in the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) for the past 10.

Otis and the street art will also be heading to Auckland and Christchurch where similar stencils will be painted.

In Christchurch the stencil will be of a policeman pulling two survivors out of earthquake rubble and in Auckland of two policewomen chasing offenders.

Otis Frizzell is the son of celebrated New Zealand artist Dick Frizzell.

I spent three weeks in Indonesia, ranging from the jumgle in Java to the semi-country town of Uluwatu.

I surfed life changing waves, made new friends and consolidated old friendships.

I got drunk, crashed a motorbike, surfed more, learnt about the darker side of Indonesia and saw Lizards that were six feet long.

Spent the better part of the last two weeks working with young kids (12-16) in Papakura making art.

The best thing about working with kids of tjis demographic is that they quite often give you a very different view of art, both their own and yours.

It is very easy to slip into a pattern of thought that makes your own artwork the centre of your universe, working with kids like this makes you realise how inconcequential your art is in the grander scheme of things. This in turn leads to you making art purely for the sake of your own enjoyment.

Policeman denies assault charge.

An Auckland policeman charged with bashing five prisoners, has denied several charges of assault, including one where he allegedly kneed one man, leading to him losing a testicle.

West Auckland police sergeant Martin James Folan pleaded not guilty to six charges of assault and one of injuring with intent to injure in the Auckland District Court yesterday, the New Zealand Herald reported .

Crown prosecutor Mark Zarifeh told the jury Folan was charged with injuring with intent to injure and an alternative charge of assaulting with intent to injure Joseph McGee, who lost a testicle after the January 8 2010 incident.

Mr McGee was drinking at a west Auckland bar when a fight began and the police and an ambulance were called.

Police restrained Mr McGee while ambulance staff checked him for injuries. He was arrested for disorderly behaviour and taken to the Henderson police station.

While Mr McGee was being processed Folan kneed him "with a good deal of force", Mr Zafirah told the court.

Mr McGee spent the night in a police cell, where he was seen holding his groin in pain. When he got home next morning, he took painkillers, but put off seeing a doctor for three days. His left testicle was later removed in hospital.

Police were allowed to use reasonable force but Folan's use of force was "gratuitous" and he had lost his temper.

There was an issue of credibility as none of the complaints was made at the time of the alleged assaults, defence counsel Richard Earwaker told the court.

Folan is also alleged to have beaten four other prisoners, including Samuel Verdonk who was arrested for disorderly behaviour in November, 2009,

Constable Scott Shearer saw Folan kick Verdonk in the groin, Mr Zarifeh told the court.

Folan was also seen to smash another prisoner's head on the concrete floor and push another prisoner against the wall with both hands around his neck, the court was told.

Spent an hour or so learning about the construction of Sanskrit lettering and each letter's associated sounds from Sue Andreasson, Sue studies at the School of Ficino, a philosophy school in Mt Eden.

While I was there, her husband Nils, showed me through his model ship building studio.
This ship here is the culmination of two years of craftsmanship. Not only is it completely to scale but each section of the rigging actual hangs correctly to show the placement of weight crated by the sails.

We left the Harbour, picked up a Waka Ama team (we were a support boat for an international race), dropped and picked up team members into and from the water. Saw this side of Rangitoto.
Then went round Rakino and over to the other side of Rangitoto. Open ocean capsizes and a vessel that was unable to make it up on the plane due to excessive weight displacement in the form of wives and other associated members.

The following is a project in which I was commissioned to paint the uniform of the Rifles, it is part of a collection painted by Greg Whitecliffe in 1987. This collection chronicles every uniform worn by law enforcement officers in Aotearoa New Zealand. I was commissioned to paint this specific uniform after the original was lost. It is a huge honour as I attended Whitecliffe Art-school which was started and ran by Greg Whitecliffe until his death, I was two years old when this collection was painted.

My addition to the collection is the first painting, my intention was to create an artwork that referenced Greg Whitecliffe's style (in this collection) but did not compromise my own portraiture style.

Just finished these walls in the foyer of a newly renovated apartment blocks. Thoroughly enjoyed painting this, one colour, straight on a white wall with no cut back colours pushed me into total commitment to my choice of line.
